Journeys in Time and Space

Postby Sarmonster » Sun Feb 17, 2008 5:38 pm

My partner just got his hands on this great six-part cosmology series, if you can get your hands on it. Very informational with a very balanced gender base as far as interviewees.

It's called "Journeys in Time and Space" from the BBC.

XKCD

Postby Sarmonster » Tue Feb 19, 2008 7:00 am

First off, XKCD.com is THE web comic for science & computer geeks, it's hilarious.

Randall, Munroe, the author, also has a blog: http://blag.xkcd.com/

Which is full of astronomy, physics, science, etc musings. and a healthy mix of fact and funny. I especially enjoyed the one discussing solar sails: http://blag.xkcd.com/2008/02/15/the-laser-elevator/

Be warned, there can be 'adult' subject matter and sometimes cussin'.

As far as images, it's stick figures... so if you're offended, consider yourself blessed with an extremely active imagination.

Gods In The Sky

Postby Sarmonster » Thu Sep 04, 2008 12:42 pm

Just finished watching a documentary series called Gods In The Sky:

This is a terrific series from England explaining how Astronomy as we know it emerged out of myths and legends. It starts with the builders of the megalithic sites and covers Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, Islam, on up through today.

Some of the ancient myths are naturally based around sexual reproduction. So if you're showing it to kids you may have some questions to answer.

Its presented by Professor Allan Chapman, Oxford Historian, Christian and member of the Royal Astronomical Society.

This is also a good documentary for the religious, about the fact that Christianity and science (via astronomy) are NOT mutually exclusive.

Look for entertaining cameos by Sir Patrick Moore and others.
